Foster Care

So, Erica's garage sale post sparked quite a few questions. Guess we should've seen that coming. ;)

We've decided to get licensed to be foster parents. We've only just started and had one visit from a social worker from DCFS. Her visit was simply an informational one so that we could get some questions answered.

Here's what we know:

1. We have to take 4 weeks of classes in August, 2 nights a week for 4 hours each.
2. In the second class we'll get fingerprinted and have background checks started.
3. Once the our paperwork and classes are complete, we'll undergo a home study. It may take 2 or 5 months to schedule and complete the home study.

Those are the basic steps and once that's done, we'll be licensed and can start fostering children. So, we're guessing it'll probably be around Christmas before we're licenced. We are planning on taking children from ages 0 to 10. We are willing to bring in sibling groups no larger than 3 children.

We also wanted to let everyone know that we haven't given up on fertility treatment. We're currently looking at options for specialists and what kind of assistance our health insurance can give. Basically, things are at a bit of a standstill until we get all that figured out.

We know that Heavenly Father is watching out for us and we are putting our trust in Him. We feel like this is the right time to open our family to children who are in need of a loving home. This is one way we can be of service to our community while we work on the fertility challenges that we've encountered.

My parents did foster care for awhile while we were waiting for Ashlee to come to our family. She was fostered with us for 6 months before we could adopt her. I really enjoyed it (me being the 16-17 year old who was with the kids for all of 3 hours a day). It was amazing to take care of these kids who were really in need, and knowing that even if they don't remember you (they were all under 2), that you gave them a home if only for a little while.

So if you have any questions or anything I'm sure my mom would be happy to help in anyway!

That sounds awesome. What a wonderful home and family those kids will get to experience too. I wanted to ask you about your future family plans when you were here, but I didn't want to be too prying, ya know? This sounds like such a great thing. How exciting!
